In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed two significant agenda items: a major utility construction project and a proposed variance for alcohol sales near a school.
The first item focused on a large-scale utility project aimed at replacing infrastructure beneath several streets. City officials noted the necessity of a budget amendment to allocate funds from the city’s fund balance to cover the costs, as current operating capital was insufficient. The project will span from 29th Street at Chadbourne to Houston Heart, with intensive work expected in the Kirby Park to Chadbourne area and near the Houston Heart to Mercedes section. Officials assured that the fund balance would remain adequate for future needs despite this expenditure.
City staff emphasized the importance of communication with local residents and businesses during construction, particularly around schools, to minimize disruptions. The construction process is expected to be expedited, similar to previous projects, although some sections may take longer due to concrete work.
The second agenda item involved a resolution for a variance to allow on-premise alcohol sales at Di Roma, an Italian restaurant located within 300 feet of McGill Elementary School. The restaurant, previously a Pizza Hut, is seeking a TABC license, which is currently restricted due to its proximity to the school. City officials highlighted that the area has a long history of commercial activity and that the request aligns with local business practices. However, the school district expressed opposition to the variance, citing concerns related to the expansion of the school’s property.
Despite the opposition, city staff recommended approval of the variance, noting that the restaurant would only serve alcohol for on-site consumption, mitigating potential issues associated with off-premise sales. The council is expected to deliberate further on both matters in upcoming sessions.
