In a regular city council meeting held on September 3, 2024, the Eagle Pass City Council recognized the formation of a new Mayor's Youth Council, aimed at empowering local youth to engage with city governance. Mayor Salinas, alongside Mayor Pro Tem Davis and Councilwoman Cruz, emphasized the importance of the youth council as a platform for young voices in the community.
The council, which has been established for about a year, has seen a transition in its membership, with several original members moving on to college. Currently, the council comprises 14 new appointees, bringing the total membership to 20, including six returning members. Ricardo Gutierrez, from the Parks and Recreation Department, highlighted the council's role as an advisory board, allowing youth to present recommendations on issues affecting their peers, such as local ordinances and community facilities.
The first official meeting of the new council is scheduled for next week, where members will be sworn in. This initiative aims to foster active participation among youth in local governance and ensure their perspectives are considered in city decisions. The council's formation reflects a commitment to engaging the younger generation in civic matters, recognizing them as vital contributors to the community's future.
