In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the upcoming Remote Area Medical (RAM) event scheduled for March 28 to 30, 2024, in Cumberland, aimed at providing essential medical services to underserved populations in the region. This marks the first RAM event in the area, and organizers anticipate a significant turnout, potentially around 500 attendees, as many individuals seek affordable healthcare options.
The event will offer a range of medical services, including dental and vision care, with local and visiting healthcare professionals volunteering their time. Organizers highlighted the pressing need for such services, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left many without necessary medical care.
To facilitate the event, the organizing committee is seeking financial support from local counties, requesting a commitment of $2,500 each to help cover the estimated total cost of $36,000 to $37,000. The Cumberland school has been selected as the venue, and local resources, including food services from Cumberland public schools, will be utilized to support the event.
The meeting underscored the importance of addressing healthcare gaps for the working poor, many of whom do not qualify for Medicaid yet cannot afford private insurance. The RAM event aims to provide immediate care and ensure follow-up services for attendees, addressing a critical need in the community.
The board unanimously approved the funding request, demonstrating strong support for the initiative, which is expected to draw individuals from surrounding areas eager for medical assistance. Organizers expressed hope that this event will not only serve immediate health needs but also pave the way for future RAM events in the region.
