During a recent government meeting, concerns over the potential introduction of zebra mussels to Square Lake were at the forefront of discussions, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures. Jane Krentz, a long-time resident and vice president of the Square Lake Association, expressed alarm over the discovery of zebra mussels in nearby Lake Carnelian, emphasizing the risk this poses to Square Lake, a cherished recreational site for many in Washington County.
Krentz noted that the proximity of the two lakes raises significant concerns, particularly as fishermen frequently travel between them without proper decontamination of their boats. She criticized the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for its reliance on voluntary compliance regarding invasive species prevention, stating that the current measures are insufficient. Krentz urged immediate action, recommending the temporary closure of Square Lake's boat access until a comprehensive strategy can be developed to prevent the introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS).
Rich Cummings, another resident and water clarity monitor, echoed these concerns, suggesting that the community should take proactive steps to halt boat access to Square Lake for the remainder of the year. He highlighted the importance of sending a clear message to the fishing community about the risks of zebra mussels and the need for vigilance in protecting the lake's ecosystem.
Both speakers called for the installation of a decontamination station at the county park and increased staffing for AIS inspections, particularly during peak fishing hours. They also advocated for better signage and public awareness campaigns to educate residents and visitors about the risks associated with invasive species.
The meeting underscored a growing urgency among local residents and officials to safeguard Square Lake from the threats posed by invasive species, with community leaders expressing a willingness to collaborate with Washington County and the DNR to implement effective solutions.
