During a recent government meeting, representatives from the LINC (Lincoln and Minnehaha County) presented a request for a funding increase of $25,000 to support their critical services. Located in Downtown Sioux Falls, LINC serves as a designated treatment center, providing essential programs for individuals facing substance withdrawal, acute intoxication, and mental health crises.
The center operates three main services: a withdrawal management program, a sobering program, and a crisis stabilization program. The withdrawal management program offers detox services, averaging 6 individuals per day, with 65 Lincoln County residents served in the past year. The sobering program, which provides a safe environment for individuals under the influence, accommodates around 10 individuals daily, while the crisis stabilization program assists those experiencing acute mental health crises.
LINC officials highlighted the importance of their services in diverting individuals from jail and emergency departments, allowing law enforcement to return to their duties more quickly. The center reported that approximately 25% of their clients walk in for services, while the majority are referred by law enforcement, particularly those undergoing involuntary commitment.
The request for increased funding comes as LINC experiences its busiest year since opening in 2021, reflecting a growing awareness of their services and an ongoing need in the community. While discussions about expanding services have not progressed due to constraints in space, funding, and staffing, LINC does employ an addiction counselor to assist clients in connecting with further treatment options.
The meeting underscored the vital role LINC plays in the community, emphasizing the need for continued support to address substance use and mental health challenges effectively.
