In a recent government meeting, Nick Veil, representing the Partnership for the Performing Arts (PPA), presented an ambitious plan to establish an 800-seat performing arts center adjacent to Del Norte High School in Crescent City. This initiative aims to enhance the cultural landscape of Del Norte and Curry Counties, addressing a significant gap in performing arts facilities in the region.
Veil, a former music retailer who has dedicated his efforts to supporting local arts education, highlighted the PPA's achievements, including the donation of over 500 musical instruments to local schools. He emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for all children to participate in music, regardless of their financial situation. The PPA has also taken over the Friends of Music organization, ensuring the continuation of classical music concerts in the area.
The proposed performing arts center, estimated to cost $50 million, will prioritize use by local schools and community groups, with plans for a groundbreaking in June 2026 and an anticipated opening in late 2027. Veil and his wife have pledged $1 million towards the project, which is currently in the final stages of design.
The center is expected to serve as a vital resource for the community, offering a venue for performances and educational outreach, thereby enriching the cultural fabric of the region. The project reflects a broader commitment to revitalizing the arts in a rural area that has faced economic challenges and resource scarcity.
