During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around the financial challenges facing Coos Curry Electric Cooperative (CCEC) and the urgent need for a collaborative approach to address these issues. Lynn, a community member, highlighted the precarious financial state of CCEC, which is currently burdened with debt equal to its assets. He emphasized that the cooperative is transitioning away from traditional hydro energy sources, which are no longer deemed environmentally favorable, and will need to seek alternative green energy sources that could cost three to four times more than current rates. This shift, coupled with ongoing inflation, is expected to lead to substantial increases in electricity bills for consumers.
Lynn proposed the formation of a working group that includes CCEC's CEO, board members, and auditors to discuss the cooperative's long-term challenges and strategies for maintaining its infrastructure over the next several decades. He stressed the importance of a thorough examination of CCEC's balance sheet and operational procedures to identify necessary improvements.
In addition to the energy discussions, the meeting also addressed the approval of a bid for repairing the Fairgrounds arena roof, which has been a long-standing issue. Terry Hughes from the Curry County Fairgrounds presented the board with a recommendation to accept a bid that would be partially funded by a $277,000 grant from Business Oregon, leaving the fairgrounds with a manageable balance for the project.
The meeting also touched on planning services, with a new contract aimed at addressing a backlog in planning clearances. The board approved an agreement with Western Investments LLC to assist with processing planning clearances at a flat fee, which is expected to expedite the approval process for contractors facing delays.
Lastly, the board discussed the pressing public safety concerns in Curry County, particularly regarding jail staffing and the need for the sheriff's involvement in addressing these issues. A special meeting was scheduled for April 6 at 1:30 PM to further discuss public safety and clarify ongoing concerns within the community.
Overall, the meeting underscored the urgent need for strategic planning and community engagement to navigate the financial and operational challenges facing local services and infrastructure.
