In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the development of a new sports complex that will feature both indoor and outdoor facilities. The project, which has been in the planning stages for over a year, is set to include a 100,000 square foot indoor sports facility, six multipurpose soccer fields, and a food and beverage pad, among other amenities.
The meeting highlighted the evolution of the site plan, which has been adjusted to enhance visibility and accessibility. A two-story clubhouse will now be centrally located, providing better visibility from Albemarle Road. The project is backed by a significant financial commitment from the city, with up to $30 million allocated for public infrastructure and tourism-related facilities.
The funding structure includes $10 million from the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and $20 million from hospitality funds, specifically sourced from the convention center tax. This financial framework aims to support the construction of both the indoor and outdoor facilities, which will be developed in partnership with four entities: EdgeSports Global, Bolton Ivory Canty, Charlotte Soccer Academy, and Southern Entertainment.
The meeting also addressed the complexities of funding and infrastructure coordination. Officials emphasized the importance of distinguishing between public and private infrastructure costs to ensure proper allocation of funds. The total estimated cost for public infrastructure improvements is approximately $19 million, while the soccer complex is projected to cost around $15.5 million. The indoor facility is estimated at $32.6 million.
As the project moves forward, the city is poised to invest nearly 47% of the total costs, with the remaining funding coming from the partnerships involved. The anticipated completion of the sports complex is expected to provide a significant boost to local tourism and community engagement in sports activities.
