In a remarkable display of bravery and quick action, Captain Heath McCormick, Lieutenant Scott Hawk, and Firefighter Jacob Terrence of Ladder 5 B shift were honored with the Medal of Merit for their heroic efforts in rescuing a victim from a burning vehicle. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM when the crew, initially en route to a grocery store, noticed smoke emanating from behind 100 Williamson Road and promptly diverted to investigate.

Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered a vehicle engulfed in flames with a victim trapped inside. Without hesitation, they donned their personal protective equipment (PPE) and began the rescue operation. Lieutenant Hawk removed the passenger door window to access the victim, while Captain McCormick assisted in the extrication process. Due to the intense fire on the driver's side, the team had to work from the passenger side, which was further complicated by a bystander who also needed to be removed for safety.

Firefighter Terrence stretched the hose line and joined the rescue efforts as Lieutenant Hawk pumped water from the truck. As the fire spread into the passenger compartment, Captain McCormick initiated fire suppression activities, allowing the team to successfully extricate the victim from the vehicle. Despite the challenging conditions, the crew continued to provide care for the victim even as they themselves required assistance.

The department's awards committee recognized the exceptional performance of McCormick, Hawk, and Terrence, highlighting their professionalism and commitment to service in a life-threatening situation. Chief Deaton praised their actions, noting that they were not dispatched to the call but acted instinctively to save a life.
