The Waukegan City Council has officially proclaimed September 15, 2024, as Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church Day, marking the church's 120th anniversary. The resolution, presented during a recent council meeting, highlights the church's significant historical and cultural contributions to the community.
Founded in 1904, Trinity AME Church has played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement and is recognized as a cornerstone of the African American community in Lake County. The church, often referred to as the \"Church of Happy People,\" has a rich history, including the establishment of its first building at 541 Oak Street in 1911 and its current location at 210 South Avenue, which opened in 1957.
The resolution acknowledges the church's founders and notable members, including Reverend and Mrs. Harry Ellison and the owners of Waukegan's first Black store. It also notes the church's growth under the leadership of Pastor Bob Thomas from 1953 to 1960 and its legacy of 23 pastors, including its first female pastor, Reverend Janice Brazil Cummings, who served from 2012 to 2020.
As part of the anniversary celebration, a special event will be held at the church on September 15, 2024, at 11 AM, where community members are invited to join in honoring the church's enduring impact and commitment to fostering unity and belonging in Waukegan.
