The continuation of the public hearing regarding petition number 30319263, submitted by the Massachusetts Electric Company, DBA National Grid, took place recently to discuss the installation of underground facilities on Valentine Road, Potter Circle, and Orchard Circle. This meeting followed an initial hearing held on August 12, where residents raised concerns about the technical details of the project.
Scott Charpentier, the public works director, emphasized the importance of clear communication with residents. He noted that National Grid had sent out an amended information packet to all abutters, which included a more accessible visual description of the project. Despite the technical nature of the initial materials, Charpentier reported that the feedback from residents had been positive, with eight inquiries received since the last meeting.
Resident Nancy Spitomik, who had previously voiced concerns, expressed her support for the project, citing ongoing power outages in the area. She highlighted the need for effective communication regarding the project's timeline, potential disruptions, and safety measures, particularly for children and pedestrians during construction. Spitomik raised specific questions about mail delivery, safety for school children, and the restoration of disturbed areas post-construction.
Chad Bonin, the design engineer for National Grid, addressed these concerns, assuring residents that the work would not begin until spring 2025, well after Halloween. He explained that the project would utilize directional drilling, minimizing disruption to driveways and sidewalks. Bonin also confirmed that safety measures would be in place, including barriers to protect pedestrians and potential use of flaggers to manage traffic during peak times.
The meeting underscored the importance of community engagement in infrastructure projects, with officials committed to addressing residents' concerns and ensuring a smooth implementation of the necessary upgrades to the electrical system.
