In a recent government meeting, officials reported a concerning rise in violent crime rates, with an overall increase of 3.9% through the second quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year. The uptick is largely attributed to a significant rise in aggravated assaults, particularly those involving firearms. Homicides have also seen a notable increase of 4.3%, with 24 reported offenses this year, 21 of which involved a firearm.
Rape offenses have surged by 8.8%, totaling 87 incidents, with 15% of these being domestic-related. Conversely, robbery rates have decreased by 3.4%, with 226 reported offenses, although the majority—74%—were person-to-person incidents. Notably, firearms were involved in 62% of all robberies.
Aggravated assaults rose by 6.1%, with 605 offenses reported, and 64% of non-domestic incidents involved firearms. Despite the overall increase in violent crime, year-to-date statistics show a 2.9% decrease in all violent crime categories, except for rape.
In terms of property crime, there was a 5.5% increase, primarily driven by a rise in shoplifting and larceny from vehicles. Burglary rates saw a slight decline of 0.6%, while larceny offenses rose by 8.3%, with motor vehicle-related thefts up by 14%. Motor vehicle thefts remain a significant concern, with Kias, Hyundais, and Hondas being the most frequently stolen vehicles.
The meeting also highlighted the concerning trend of gun thefts, with 71% of stolen firearms taken from vehicles, a significant increase from previous years. The clearance rates for various crimes, including homicide and robbery, were reported to be on par with national averages, though challenges remain in victim cooperation and timely reporting.
Overall, the data reflects a complex landscape of crime in the region, with officials emphasizing the need for continued efforts to address these rising trends and enhance community safety.
