In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed significant amendments to traffic regulations aimed at improving safety and traffic flow, particularly around schools. Chief Hurley presented a series of proposed changes to the city’s code of ordinances, focusing on speed limits, left turn restrictions, and parking regulations.
One of the key changes involves the repeal and replacement of sections related to speed limits and school zones. The council plans to remove outdated left turn restrictions on Hickory Tree Road and introduce a new no left turn ordinance at the east entrance of Ed Hodges School on Platt Drive. These adjustments are intended to enhance traffic management during school drop-off and pick-up times, addressing concerns raised by school principals.
Additionally, the council is updating the speed limit listings for several streets, ensuring that all municipal streets reflect the appropriate limits. Currently, many streets in the city have a speed limit of 25 mph, which is lower than the standard 30 mph for municipal roads. The amendments will correct previous oversights and ensure consistency across the city.
The proposed changes also include new parking regulations aimed at improving the quality of life for residents. These regulations will prohibit parking vehicles for sale on the street, as well as restrict the parking of boats and trailers. Furthermore, a new rule will prevent parking within 10 feet of mailboxes, ensuring that residents can receive their mail without obstruction.
The council members expressed their support for these changes, emphasizing the importance of safety for children and the need for clear and consistent traffic regulations. The proposed amendments are set to be voted on, with the aim of implementing them before the new school year begins.
