In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress of the Equitable Development Framework Plan, aimed at enhancing the Hollis T. Williams Stormwater Park and its surrounding neighborhoods. Megan O'Hara from Urban Design Associates presented the outcomes of a community engagement process that took place over the summer, emphasizing the importance of local input in shaping the plan's draft principles.
The project area encompasses a half-mile radius around the park, extending into both the Eastside and Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) districts, as well as neighboring areas. The initiative seeks to ensure that the development of the park and any future private projects within this radius adhere to higher standards, particularly when public funding is involved.
O'Hara outlined the timeline of community engagement, which began in June with meetings and surveys designed to gather feedback from residents. Events held in late July, including a community party and recreational activities, attracted significant participation and provided opportunities for attendees to voice their opinions. The feedback collected will inform the draft principles, which will be shared with local associations before the full development plan is presented in October.
The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts of various teams, including HDR Engineering and JLPD, focusing on accessibility, economic impact, and community engagement. O'Hara noted the importance of documenting the history of the area and integrating it into the park's design, ensuring that the project respects the legacy of the neighborhoods involved.
As the city moves forward with this initiative, officials aim to create a positive impact on the community, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among residents while enhancing local amenities. The next steps will involve refining the principles based on community feedback and preparing for the upcoming presentation of the comprehensive development plan.
