During a recent meeting of the Bridgeport Board of Education, public commenter Miss Stovall raised significant concerns regarding transparency and access to board materials. Speaking to board members, she emphasized the critical need for improved communication and the timely dissemination of information to the public.
Stovall highlighted that the lack of accessible board materials has hindered citizens' ability to engage meaningfully in discussions about agenda items. She referenced a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request she submitted in May, which has yet to be fulfilled, stating that delays in providing these materials have created frustration and confusion among community members.
She pointed out that other governing bodies, such as the city council and state board, manage to upload documents alongside their agendas, questioning why the Bridgeport Board of Education has not adopted similar practices. Stovall argued that without transparency, community members cannot offer valuable insights or ask pertinent questions regarding board activities.
Additionally, she noted that board members themselves expressed difficulties in digesting materials in a timely manner, which has led to postponed meetings. Stovall's comments underscore a growing demand for accountability and better communication from the Board of Education to foster a more engaged and informed community.
