During a recent government meeting, community concerns surrounding the 87th Avenue Bridge project were addressed, highlighting tensions between local residents and the contracting company, MCM. Eduardo Bertrand, a Palmetto Bay resident and attorney representing MCM, expressed frustration over misinformation circulating in the community regarding the project's status.
Bertrand emphasized that MCM undergoes a rigorous qualification process for all bids, which includes evaluations by experts and reviews of their history and experience. He criticized a recent village post that suggested the community was unaware of the contract award, asserting that residents had been actively engaged and informed throughout the process.
He described the situation as divisive and accused the village of fear-mongering, stating that such comments could jeopardize community safety. Bertrand pointed out that the project is under the oversight of multiple agencies, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District, and attributed delays and increased costs to ongoing litigation rather than contractor incompetence.
The meeting underscored the importance of clear communication between local government and residents, as well as the need for accurate information to mitigate unnecessary fears regarding infrastructure projects.
