Workers from Delaware North are calling for urgent negotiations for a new union contract following the expiration of their previous agreement on July 31. During a recent government meeting, a representative highlighted the pressing need for improved wages and benefits, citing a significant rise in the cost of living that has left many employees struggling to meet basic needs.
The representative shared alarming statistics from a survey conducted among Delaware North employees, revealing that 50% of the 788 respondents have been unable to afford housing costs, while 26% reported difficulties in affording food. Additionally, 22% admitted to skipping meals to save money. These findings align with a report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition, which noted a staggering 67% increase in fair market rent in Atlanta since 2019.
The representative emphasized the personal impact of financial strain, recounting a recent vehicle repair that cost $700, forcing them to rely on costly transportation alternatives. They expressed a commitment to providing excellent service at their workplace but underscored the necessity of a fair contract that acknowledges their contributions and allows them to support their families.
As negotiations are set to continue in August, workers are hopeful for a serious dialogue with Delaware North to secure a contract that reflects their needs and dignity.
