In a heartfelt ceremony on July 20, 2024, the Caldwell County Board of Commissioners honored three North Carolina Wildlife Commission officers for their heroic actions during a tragic drowning incident at Wilson's Creek. Master Officer John Kiger, Sergeant Dustin Etheridge, and Lieutenant Isaac Hannah were recognized for their bravery and lifesaving efforts that prevented further loss of life.
On that fateful day, the officers were alerted by a six-year-old boy who reported that his parents were drowning. Responding swiftly, the officers rushed to the scene, where they found a mother and her infant child in distress. Master Officer Kiger was the first to enter the water, successfully retrieving the mother and beginning CPR with the assistance of his colleagues.
Sergeant Etheridge played a crucial role by retrieving lifesaving equipment, which proved instrumental in the rescue efforts. He and Kiger then reentered the water to save the infant, bringing the child to safety and initiating further lifesaving measures. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Hannah maintained situational awareness, ensuring that a man trapped in a dangerous current was also rescued.
The commendations presented to the officers highlighted their selflessness and disregard for personal safety in the face of danger. The Caldwell County Board of Commissioners expressed deep gratitude for their valor, stating that their actions not only saved lives but also provided hope to a young boy who would have otherwise faced the loss of both parents.
The unanimous approval of the commendations underscored the community's appreciation for the officers' dedication and courage. The ceremony concluded with a call for continued support for local law enforcement and recognition of their vital role in ensuring public safety.
