The Saint Charles Parish Council has officially proclaimed September 20-21, 2024, as King Cat Fishing Tournament Weekend, highlighting the annual event that promises to bring excitement and community engagement to the area. The tournament, hosted by the River Parish Tourist Commission, will feature local fishing competitions across Lake Des Almonds, Lake Salvador, and the Mississippi River, attracting teams from across the nation.
Councilwoman Miss Wilson emphasized the tournament's family-friendly nature, allowing a fourth team member under 16 years old to participate. Additionally, the King Kids Fishing Rodeo will take place on September 21 at the Bonnet Carré Spillway, welcoming children aged 15 and under. Participants will have the chance to win scholarships, with names entered into a drawing at the end of the year.
The event will culminate in a final weigh-in at the Bonnet Carré Spillway Boat Launch Pavilion, with weigh-ins broadcast live on various platforms, including YouTube and Facebook. Last year's tournament saw participation grow significantly, with 38 boats and 71 anglers expected this year, compared to 7 boats and 17 anglers in the previous event.
Parish President Matt Sewell expressed enthusiasm for the tournament's growth and the community's involvement, noting that schools in the area have received promotional materials to encourage participation. The King Kids Rodeo is a free event aimed at introducing young anglers to fishing, complete with door prizes and fishing kits.
With a blend of outdoor excitement and community celebration, the King Cat Fishing Tournament Weekend is set to be a highlight for Saint Charles Parish, fostering both competition and camaraderie among fishing enthusiasts.
