A government meeting highlighted a significant bicycle and pedestrian improvement project along Stero 5, extending from Camino Real to Northeast Meisner. The initiative aims to enhance safety and connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians through a series of upgrades across two major segments.
The first segment, from Camino Real to Southeast Meisner, involves repurposing US 1 by converting outside lanes into dedicated bike lanes and sidewalks. This section will require extensive work, including moving curbs, modifying drainage systems, replacing sidewalk sections, and upgrading traffic signalization at key intersections.
The second segment, from Southeast Meisner to Northeast Meisner, will focus on milling and resurfacing the road to incorporate wider buffer bike lanes. This area will see quicker construction due to less extensive modifications.
Key improvements include reducing the design speed from 40 mph to 35 mph, enhancing bicycle conflict areas with green pavement markings, and upgrading push buttons at signalized intersections. The project also plans to introduce wider sidewalks, landscaped buffers, and a protected pedestrian crosswalk at Park Plaza Real.
Construction will involve temporary lane closures, but officials assured that accessibility to local businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the project. The initiative is expected to significantly improve bicycle connectivity and pedestrian safety in the area.
