During a recent Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) governing board meeting, several notable achievements and recognitions were celebrated, highlighting the contributions of students and staff within the community.
The meeting commenced with the recognition of two fifth-grade students, Aidan Darling and Jett Versluice, from Redfield Elementary School. The boys were honored for their quick thinking and bravery after they called 911 upon discovering a man in distress near a local park. Their actions, which included staying with the man until help arrived, earned them a Good Citizen Award from the Scottsdale Police Department.
In another highlight, Kiva Elementary School's fifth grader, Miles Baer, was recognized for his accomplishments in geography. Miles represented Arizona at the International Geography Bee World Championships in Vienna, Austria, where he excelled in both individual and team competitions. His principal and former teacher joined him on stage to celebrate his achievements, further emphasizing the importance of nurturing student talents.
Navajo Elementary School was also celebrated for being named the Valley's Best Public School in the Community Choice Awards. Principal Pat Slock expressed gratitude for the support from staff, students, and the community, emphasizing the collaborative effort to help children reach their full potential.
The meeting also acknowledged the hard work of the grounds team following severe weather that damaged school properties. Director of Building Services, Dennis Raler, commended his team for their swift response in clearing fallen trees and preparing the campuses for the school year, ensuring a safe environment for students.
Additionally, the board announced that Pie Elementary School received a $5,000 grant to establish a pollinator garden, aimed at supporting local wildlife, particularly monarch butterflies.
Looking ahead, Superintendent Dr. Menzel reminded attendees of the upcoming September 11th commemorations and the importance of suicide prevention awareness month. SUSD will host various events to educate students and families on these critical topics.
The meeting concluded with an invitation to the community for the third annual college and career fair, set to take place at Scottsdale Stadium Fieldhouse, showcasing opportunities for students to connect with colleges and local businesses.
