In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress of the Southern Colorado Rail Park project, a public-private partnership aimed at enhancing regional economic development and job creation. The project, which has been in the works since 2018, involves multiple stakeholders, including El Paso County, the City of Colorado Springs, and the Lehi Company.

The proposed rail park is strategically located on 100 acres of undeveloped land, adjacent to Fort Carson and a sand and gravel mining operation. The project aims to establish a new rail access point to Fort Carson, which is expected to improve military logistics and security by reducing vulnerabilities in the current transportation route.

Key highlights from the meeting included the project's potential to create approximately 77,100 new jobs, primarily in manufacturing. The initiative was inspired by a study commissioned by former county administrator Jeff Green, which identified the need for job creation in El Paso County. The project is also expected to leverage the existing workforce from Fort Carson, where many soldiers seek employment after service.

To fund the estimated $269 million infrastructure costs, the project will utilize a Title 32 Metropolitan District, allowing for the issuance of tax-exempt bonds. The meeting also addressed concerns regarding the project's financial viability, with assurances that the anticipated commercial development would generate sufficient tax revenue to support the bond repayments.
