El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Steve Schleicher provided a comprehensive update on preparations for the upcoming November 2024 general election during a recent meeting with county commissioners. Key topics included voter outreach, election security, and accessibility measures aimed at ensuring a smooth electoral process.
Schleicher outlined critical dates leading up to the election, including the mailing of ballots to overseas military voters on September 20 and the first day ballots can be issued on September 23. He emphasized the importance of voter registration, noting that Colorado allows same-day registration, with a deadline for mail-in registration set for October 28. The county will also expand its voter service polling centers (VSPCs) from nine during the June primary to 38 for the general election, alongside adding three new secure ballot drop boxes, bringing the total to 42.
In an effort to enhance voter education, the Clerk's Office is implementing targeted outreach initiatives, including workshops and social media campaigns, particularly aimed at senior citizens, military personnel, and non-English speaking voters. Schleicher highlighted the use of technology, such as the Pocketalk device, which translates over 76 languages to assist voters who may face language barriers.
Security measures for the election have been a priority, with the Clerk's Office receiving exemplary marks from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) following a recent inspection. Schleicher detailed the rigorous testing protocols for voting equipment, including pre-election logic and accuracy tests, and post-election audits to ensure the integrity of the election process.
The Clerk's Office is also focused on addressing potential challenges, such as anticipated high voter turnout, which could reach 90%. To mitigate issues like long lines and traffic at polling locations, the Office of Emergency Management has been activated to assist with planning and logistics.
Schleicher reassured commissioners that robust measures are in place to maintain transparency and accountability throughout the election process, including live streaming of ballot box security footage. He concluded by emphasizing the commitment to ensuring that all eligible voters in El Paso County have equitable access to the electoral process, regardless of their circumstances.
