In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a supplemental budget request stemming from feasibility studies conducted after the late Christine fire. The studies, in collaboration with Holy Cross Energy and Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA), led to the recommendation of two key projects: the ongoing ABC microgrid project and a proposed geothermal heating district.
The geothermal project, which has received a $250,000 grant from the Colorado Energy Office, aims to finalize feasibility studies and design plans for a heating district in the AABC area, including the airport. This study will build on a previous 2021 analysis, focusing on site conditions, hydrogeology, and the potential for utilizing wastewater energy from the Aspen Consolidated Sanitation District.
Officials emphasized that the western slope of Colorado is at the forefront of advancing geothermal energy projects. The proposed budget for the geothermal project totals $475,000, with $225,000 coming from the airport fund and the remainder from grants. The feasibility study will assess the project's viability but will not include detailed engineering plans at this stage.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted a solar implementation project at Deer Creek Ranch, which aims to capitalize on Holy Cross's renewable energy incentive program. The project could allow the property to produce up to 200% of its annual energy consumption, generating credits to offset energy costs for other properties. The Open Space and Trails Board recommended funding for this project, which would mark the first net gain property for the program.
Concerns were raised regarding the impact of the solar project on local wildlife, particularly elk migration patterns. However, officials assured that the selected site would not impede wildlife movement and had been vetted by local wildlife experts.
Overall, these initiatives reflect a commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions in the region, with potential benefits for both the environment and local communities. The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration among various agencies and the need for innovative approaches to energy management in the face of climate challenges.
