During a recent government meeting, officials celebrated the success of the Picking County Cares Awards, a highlight for the commissioners, before shifting focus to a significant environmental initiative involving sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Rich Engelhart, Deputy County Manager, and Michael Porton, Climate Action Analyst, presented a proposal for a feasibility study aimed at establishing a SAF refinery in Colorado. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce emissions at local airports, with support from various regional partners, including Mesa County and the Grand Junction Economic Development Partnership.
The project has garnered attention from major aviation companies, including Airbus and Boeing, as well as state agencies like the Colorado Energy Office and the USDA. Engelhart noted that the collaboration aims to enhance local aviation fuel sustainability while creating job opportunities and addressing environmental concerns.
The county is pursuing a Tier 1 grant of up to $200,000, with a 50% matching commitment from local funds. Mesa County has also pledged an additional $50,000 to support the initiative. The outcome of the grant application is expected in November, but officials indicated that they would explore alternative funding options if necessary.
The meeting underscored the importance of regional cooperation in tackling climate challenges and advancing sustainable practices in aviation.
