In response to an impending tropical storm, several school districts across the region, including Harrison County and Luxe Schools, have announced closures for the following day. Hancock County has already closed its schools today, with all three counties along the coast expected to follow suit.
During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the authority of local boards to close county operations. It was clarified that while the board can close most county departments, certain offices, such as the Chancery Clerk and tax-related offices, must remain open unless the governor declares a state of emergency. This declaration would also extend filing deadlines for various legal and tax matters.
Officials indicated that a state of emergency might be declared later in the day, which would allow for broader closures and extensions of deadlines. They also discussed the potential for early release on Wednesday and delayed reporting on Thursday, depending on the storm's trajectory.
Concerns were raised about the safety of residents, particularly those in low-lying areas and mobile homes, as the storm could bring significant flooding and tornadoes. To address these risks, officials recommended coordinating with the Red Cross and local agencies to open three county shelters and sought approval to use the Army Grove Community Center in Goldport as an additional shelter. This would provide four safe locations for residents in need of refuge during the storm.
