In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the long-awaited Wylie Murphy Trail Connections project, which aims to enhance connectivity between the cities of Wylie and Murphy. Brent, a project representative, highlighted the significance of this trail, which will ultimately link Wylie to Breckenridge Park in Richardson.
The trail construction primarily falls within Murphy's jurisdiction, with a small section extending into Wylie. The project has faced delays but is now moving forward, as the city of Murphy has taken it to bid and plans to award a contract in September. An interlocal agreement is being developed, which will ensure that Murphy's contractor covers the costs for the entire trail, including the Wylie section.
Brent explained that the trail design differs from Wylie's typical standards. The Murphy section will feature a 10-foot concrete trail alongside a 4-foot asphalt lane, intended for pedestrians. This design contrasts with Wylie's usual 12-foot concrete trails. The project will also include safety measures for crosswalks, such as solar-powered lights and strobes, to enhance pedestrian safety at busy intersections.
During the meeting, board members raised questions about the trail's design, particularly the decision to route it through the median rather than along the side of the road. Brent clarified that this design minimizes the number of lanes pedestrians must cross at once, thereby improving safety.
The timeline for the project's commencement and completion remains uncertain, as the city of Murphy is responsible for managing the construction schedule. Updates will be provided to the board as they become available. Overall, the Wylie Murphy Trail Connections project represents a significant step toward improving regional connectivity and pedestrian safety in the area.
