Enrollment in local schools has seen a modest increase, with 113 additional students reported as of last Friday, spanning junior kindergarten through grade 12. This uptick comes as the district prepares for significant developments, including the construction of Eastside Elementary. The contractor has set up a job trailer, and grading permits have been secured, indicating that site work is expected to commence imminently.
In addition to construction updates, the district is emphasizing the importance of parental engagement. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for October 7 and 8, with no school on October 11 for a compensatory day and an in-service day on October 14.
A key topic of discussion was the upcoming ballot measure I M 28, which proposes the elimination of sales tax on all items for human consumption. This measure has raised concerns due to its potential impact on state revenue, with estimates suggesting a loss of up to $640 million, which could account for approximately 25% of the state’s budget. The measure has garnered opposition from the Associated School Boards of South Dakota and the South Dakota Education Association. Officials urged citizens to educate themselves on this and other ballot measures to make informed voting decisions.
The meeting also addressed ongoing contract negotiations with the Brandon Valley Education Association for 2025 and beyond, and updates on the special education fund committee's efforts to evaluate resources and needs.
In financial matters, the district reported on the issuance of $36 million in capital outlay certificates for the Eastside Elementary project, with about $10 million remaining for future use. The district is currently collaborating with its design team to assess its five-year plan and long-term vision, with plans to present findings at the next meeting.
