During a recent government meeting, city officials addressed ongoing concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of the parking lot at Gateway Plaza in Fort Pierce. The discussion highlighted the city's efforts to manage potholes that have become a safety issue for both pedestrians and vehicles.

City officials reported that complaints from citizens and internal sources prompted an investigation into the parking lot's condition, which has been under scrutiny since May. Despite attempts by the property owner to fill potholes with gravel and sand, city representatives indicated that these repairs are merely temporary solutions. They emphasized that the underlying issues stem from inadequate soil and substrate used in the original construction, which dates back several decades.

The asset manager for Gateway Plaza, who participated in the meeting via phone, confirmed that a comprehensive renovation plan is in the works. This plan includes a complete overhaul of the parking lot, which is expected to be submitted for city approval shortly. The manager expressed hope that the city would approve the amended site plan within 30 days, allowing construction to commence within 45 days thereafter.

In light of the ongoing issues, the city has granted the property owner a 60-day extension to obtain the necessary permits and comply with repair conditions. Failure to meet these requirements could result in fines of $250 per day. The plaza, currently operating at only 20% occupancy, remains open to the public, with efforts made to direct traffic away from the most hazardous areas.

The meeting also addressed other code violations in the city, including exterior maintenance issues at various properties, with similar timelines and penalties established for compliance. The city continues to prioritize public safety and the aesthetic improvement of its commercial areas.
