In a recent city council meeting, Richard Nellums, a resident of Portage, commended the efforts behind the 2024 Master Plan, which is set for approval by the Planning Commission. He highlighted the plan's dual focus on expanding economic and housing opportunities while enhancing recreational and environmental resources. However, he raised concerns about the lack of guidance on balancing development with environmental conservation.
Nellums urged the city council to establish measurable metrics to track progress on these competing priorities, suggesting that annual reports on housing unit construction and environmental preservation could provide clarity and accountability. He referenced a residential market analysis indicating a potential for 245 housing units and 220 market-rate rentals annually, proposing these figures as targets for the city.
Following Nellums' remarks, the council moved through its agenda, including a public hearing on a proposed amendment for a residential development at 8150 Creekside Drive. City Manager Mister McInnes introduced the proposal, which involves a $15 million investment for 46 condominium units by a local developer. The meeting underscored the city's ongoing commitment to balancing growth with environmental stewardship as it prepares for future developments.
