In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the development of a new public art project featuring two large metal sculptures known as \"selfie wings.\" Originally planned as ten sculptures, the project has been scaled down to two for this year, with the intention of enhancing their design and impact. The sculptures will be installed at Hedges Boyer Park amphitheater and Frost Parkway, with each piece featuring inspiring quotes and links to mental health resources, thanks to a partnership with the Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Coalition.
The sculptures will be crafted from industrial steel and powder-coated to prevent rust, ensuring their longevity. The total budget for the project is estimated at $11,000, which will be funded through the squirrel fund. This includes $4,200 for each sculpture, $750 for installation, and $550 for the accompanying plaques.
Council members expressed their support for the project, emphasizing the importance of moving forward efficiently to meet the completion deadline of October 2024. Discussions also included the need for further committee meetings to finalize details and ensure compliance with local regulations regarding public utilities.
In addition to the art project, a resident raised concerns about water contamination and inquired about testing options. Council members provided information on local resources for water quality testing, highlighting the city's role as a private utility provider.
The meeting concluded with a resolution introduced for immediate passage, further demonstrating the council's commitment to addressing community needs and enhancing public spaces.
