As summer programming winds down with the return of school, the Carmel Parks Department reported a successful season, with 7,271 campers enrolled in summer camps, all of which operated without cancellations. The camps achieved an impressive 80% full enrollment, with a notable increase in participation compared to previous years. The department highlighted the ability to accommodate more campers due to the availability of student staff, particularly from local colleges and high schools, although facility capacity remains a limiting factor.

The water park season concluded on August 4, marking a significant year with over 108,000 visitors and generating more than $1.4 million in revenue, a rebound from the impacts of COVID-19. The average daily attendance reached 1,641, surpassing pre-pandemic figures from 2019. The department noted that the earlier start of the school year has posed challenges for staffing, as many employees are high school students.

In addition to recreational programming, the Parks Department is developing a park resource officer program in collaboration with the Carmel Police Department, aimed at enhancing safety and community engagement in parks. This initiative is set to be implemented by 2025, with a focus on a proactive and educational approach rather than traditional enforcement.

The meeting also addressed ongoing improvements in Central Park, including the renovation of the popular Westermeyer Commons playground, which has seen significant wear due to high visitor numbers. Upgrades included new safety surfacing and the addition of artificial turf to enhance the play area. Furthermore, a new art installation featuring a bison and calf sculpture has been introduced, designed to engage families and encourage exploration of the park's trails.

Lastly, the department is implementing free sunscreen stations in select parks to promote wellness among visitors, particularly for families spending time outdoors. This initiative aims to ensure that children are protected from sun exposure while enjoying park facilities. The Parks Department continues to focus on enhancing community resources and maintaining the quality of public spaces for residents.
