During a recent government meeting, community members gathered to recognize Veronica Vigilant for her heroic actions in a life-threatening situation. On June 27, 2024, Vigilant displayed remarkable courage when she assisted a man whose jack had collapsed while he was fixing his truck. She promptly called 911 and provided first aid until paramedics arrived, showcasing her selflessness and commitment to the safety of others. Her efforts were acknowledged by Nicole Bouvier from the Cuna Counseling Center, who nominated her for the recognition.
The meeting also featured an update from Marcy Durant regarding the Cuna Food Bank, which has become a vital resource in the community. Durant highlighted the dedication of approximately 45 volunteers who contribute regularly to the food bank, emphasizing its role as a hub for service groups. She shared a recent success story involving a young man who, needing community service hours, restored a retired vehicle from the Idaho Food Bank, which is now used to promote the Cuna Food Bank.
Durant explained that the Cuna Food Bank operates differently from many others in Idaho, focusing on providing a grocery store-like experience for patrons. This approach allows individuals to receive food assistance in a way that better supports their household budgets, enabling them to manage other expenses effectively. The food bank recently relocated to a larger warehouse space, allowing for improved operations and service delivery.
Statistical data presented by Durant illustrated the growing demand for food assistance. In July 2022, the food bank processed 81 orders serving 75 households. By July 2023, those numbers increased to 108 orders for 97 households, and in July 2024, the food bank served 307 orders, reaching 178 households. This significant rise in service reflects the community's increasing reliance on the food bank, underscoring the importance of continued support and resources for its operations.
