The Montgomery County Board of Education convened recently to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Judy DaCa, a former board member who dedicated over 50 years to the school system. Dr. DaCa, who served from 2006 to 2022, was remembered for her unwavering commitment to equity and access in education, as well as her roles in various educational organizations, including the Multicultural Community Partnership and the Montgomery County Alliance of Black School Educators. Her contributions earned her numerous accolades, including induction into the Montgomery County Human and Civil Rights Hall of Fame.

Board members shared personal anecdotes highlighting Dr. DaCa's passion for education and her impact on students and colleagues alike. They emphasized her role as a mentor and advocate, particularly for underserved communities, and expressed deep sorrow at her passing.

In addition to the tribute to Dr. DaCa, the board addressed several resolutions, including the approval of the monthly Human Resources and Development report, which included updates on new hires and employee resignations. The board also expressed condolences for the recent deaths of three staff members, recognizing their contributions to the school community.

The meeting concluded with the introduction of new appointments within the Montgomery County Public Schools, including Miss Essie McGuire as Chief of Staff and Mr. Adnan Mahmoud as Deputy Chief in the Office of Facilities Management. The board also recognized the Montgomery County Public Schools Education Foundation for awarding over $2.3 million in scholarships to students in fiscal year 2024.

Lastly, the board proclaimed September 8-14, 2024, as National Suicide Prevention Week, reaffirming its commitment to mental health awareness and support for students. This initiative aligns with the district's ongoing efforts to promote emotional well-being through educational programs and resources.
