In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the implementation of a new telehealth behavioral health service aimed at reaching 160,000 school children across Ohio. The initiative, led by Deputy Director of Innovation Nikki Rice, is designed to fill existing gaps in mental health services within schools rather than duplicate current offerings.

Rice emphasized that while there are numerous providers of school behavioral health services, none have the capacity to serve such a large number of students statewide. The selected organization specializes in telehealth and has a proven track record in other states, such as Iowa and Hawaii. This approach allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the service's effectiveness, with metrics to be provided back to the state.

The initiative will not replace existing services but will complement them. Schools interested in the program will be required to submit a form detailing their current relationships with service providers and their wait times, ensuring that the new service addresses specific needs without redundancy.

Concerns were raised by Senator Wilkin regarding the lack of competitive bidding for the project, with most of the waivers presented being deemed overdeveloped. In response, officials clarified that the unique scale and nature of the initiative warranted a different approach, prioritizing innovation and the ability to meet the extensive needs of Ohio's school districts.
