In a recent government meeting, officials approved a significant budget amendment to support improvements at the Harden County Airport, Hawthorne Field. The amendment will increase the total project cost from approximately $1.84 million to over $4 million, with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) covering 90% of the expenses.
The funding plan includes a transfer of $215,860 from the general fund to the airport funds, which will be allocated to a newly created construction cost line item. This budget adjustment is part of a broader effort to enhance airport infrastructure, which has not seen substantial capital improvements since 2014.
Commissioners expressed satisfaction with the progress made on the project, acknowledging the extensive work required to bring the airport up to current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. The improvements will address critical issues such as runway and taxiway reconstruction and drainage enhancements, which have been a concern for over a decade.
Dale Delwilleford, a key figure in the project, highlighted the challenges faced due to rising construction costs, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he noted that some costs, particularly for asphalt, have begun to decrease, allowing for a more manageable budget.
The meeting underscored the economic impact of the airport on the local community, with estimates suggesting that for every dollar spent on the project, the economic return could be between $1.50 and $2.65. This investment is expected to generate local business activity, including fuel sales and contractor services.
Overall, the approval marks a significant step forward in revitalizing the airport, ensuring it meets both current operational needs and future demands.
