In a recent city council meeting, the La Porte, Indiana council approved a resolution aimed at enhancing public safety by eliminating three highway grade crossings. The crossings in question are located at Tipton Street, Pulaski Street, and Detroit Street, all of which have been identified as safety hazards due to the high volume of train traffic—approximately 88 trains daily.
The resolution mandates that Norfolk Southern Corporation will be responsible for the physical removal of the crossings and the installation of approved barricades. This action is part of a broader initiative to improve emergency vehicle access and reduce the risk of accidents, particularly following a recent incident involving a train and a vehicle with children on board.
Importantly, the crossings will not be closed until a new overpass, funded through the Indiana Department of Transportation's local contracts program, is completed and operational. This ensures that traffic flow is maintained during the transition.
Additionally, Norfolk Southern has agreed to donate a 0.81-acre parcel containing a former depot building to the city, which will serve as an incentive in lieu of a $300,000 payment. The city council expressed gratitude for this donation, highlighting the collaborative efforts between local government and the railroad company.
The resolution passed unanimously, reflecting a shared commitment to improving public safety and infrastructure in La Porte.
