During a recent government meeting, officials discussed traffic management strategies related to a proposed development site with access points on Palmer Road and Hegarty Road. The engineering division raised concerns about traffic flow, particularly regarding left turns from Palmer Road into the site. In response, the applicant submitted a traffic impact assessment conducted by Fleece and Vanderbrink, which highlighted the limited space for vehicles to queue when turning left.
To mitigate potential congestion, the applicant proposed the installation of no left turn signs on Palmer Road, which the Canton Township Engineering Division deemed an acceptable solution. This prohibition would be particularly enforced during large events when the parking lot is expected to reach capacity. The applicant also plans to implement a messaging initiative to guide visitors to access the site via Hegarty Road instead.
Looking ahead, officials recommended exploring the possibility of obtaining approval from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to extend the left turn lane on Palmer Road. However, they noted that this process could be lengthy due to jurisdictional complexities, as the area near I-275 falls under MDOT's authority rather than Wayne County's.
The meeting underscored the importance of effective traffic management in accommodating increased visitor numbers while ensuring safety and accessibility.
