In a recent meeting of the Value Adjustment Board (VAB), significant discussions centered around the fiscal year 2024-2025 budget, particularly concerning professional services funding. Miss Sidman, the VAB clerk, reported on the outcomes of a budget hearing held on August 8, where the city council's budget faced a $40,000 reduction in professional services. Despite efforts to recover this amount, no additional funding was secured.
However, the VAB successfully advocated for a $65,000 increase in professional services funding, which was approved by the finance committee. This increase is crucial as the board anticipates a similar volume of petitions and magistrate hours in the upcoming year, reflecting a notable uptick in activity compared to previous years.
To address a current shortfall, the board had to reallocate $40,000 from the council's salary lapse to cover obligations for professional services, including payments to the VAB attorney and magistrates. The budget for the upcoming year is expected to be finalized at the last meeting in September, with the increase in funding split between the school board and the city council.
Additionally, discussions included the recommendation to maintain the VAB attorney's annual salary at $110,000, with provisions for legal actions that may require the board to be dismissed as an improper party. This adjustment aims to ensure that unexpected legal costs do not further strain the board's budget.
The meeting underscored the importance of adequate funding for the VAB to fulfill its responsibilities effectively, especially in light of increasing demands on its services.
