During a recent government meeting, the Bethlehem City Council addressed several key issues, including public safety measures and updates on the fire department's recruitment efforts.

Rachel Leon, chairwoman of the public safety committee, initiated discussions on a new ordinance aimed at curbing the illegal use of dirt bikes and ATVs on city roadways. This initiative reflects ongoing concerns about safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

The council also reviewed Bill Number 25 for 2024, which proposes amendments to the general fund budget. Sponsored by council members Miss Quietek and Miss Leone, the bill is currently in its second reading. Council members sought updates on the status of the budget amendments before proceeding to a final vote.

In a related update, the fire department reported progress in its recruitment efforts. Chief officials confirmed that out of eight candidates remaining on the list, seven were selected for employment, alongside one carryover candidate from a previous academy. These recruits began their training at Harrisburg Community College, focusing on EMT medical studies, with graduation scheduled for January 10. Following graduation, they will be sworn in and assigned to operational platoons.

Additionally, the council addressed a recent fire incident on Broad Street involving a historic house. Chief Callahan reported that the fire escalated to a second alarm due to adverse weather conditions but was quickly contained. The fire is currently under investigation by the fire marshal's office.
