Commissioner Declan Walker emphasized the importance of involving young people in the fight against gun violence, describing their engagement as crucial to making meaningful progress. He praised the efforts of the Youth Steering Committee, which aims to address gun violence as a public health crisis. The committee plans to continue its work despite the conclusion of a nationwide project, focusing on community outreach and personal development through monthly meetings.

The committee's initiatives will include sharing their findings with the broader community and creating a youth alliance with the city’s broader gun violence initiative, known as Impact GNV. The committee, funded through the National League of Cities, currently has seven members and is looking to expand its ranks to better represent the community.
