In a recent government meeting, board members discussed initiatives aimed at promoting affordable housing within the county. A key proposal that emerged is the development of a preapproved Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) program. This initiative seeks to simplify the construction process for homeowners interested in adding ADUs to their properties.
Under the proposed program, an architect will design a selection of ADU plans that will be made available to residents at no cost. These plans will undergo review by local building officials to ensure compliance with jurisdictional standards. Once approved, homeowners will be able to use these plans without the need for extensive plan reviews, significantly streamlining the permitting process.
To participate, homeowners will need to submit a site plan detailing the intended location of the ADU on their property, ensuring it meets lot coverage requirements. Additionally, they will be required to sign waivers to protect both the architect and the city from liability related to construction disputes.
The request for proposals (RFP) issued by the board calls for the creation of up to eight different ADU designs, including at least one accessible unit for individuals with disabilities. Among the proposed designs are options for carriage houses, which feature living spaces above garages.
This initiative reflects the board's commitment to addressing the affordable housing crisis by making it easier for residents to add housing options on their properties.
