Centralia's ambitious Hub City Greenways project is gaining momentum, with significant developments aimed at transforming the city’s trail system into a reality. During a recent council meeting, updates were shared on three key initiatives that will help advance this long-term vision.
First, the integration of Hub City Greenways into the city’s transportation master plan is underway. This effort includes conceptual designs for urban trails, laying the groundwork for future funding opportunities. City officials highlighted the importance of this foundational work, which is being spearheaded by local planners.
Second, Centralia has been awarded a competitive federal grant known as the Thriving Communities grant, which, while not providing direct funding, will offer essential technical assistance. This support will help the city engage the public, identify funding opportunities, and develop strategic plans. A consultant team from Washington D.C. has been engaged, expressing enthusiasm for Centralia's proactive approach to community development.
The third initiative involves a partnership with Blue Zones, which has offered funding to develop trail signage. This project aims to create guidelines for consistent and informative signage across the trail system, enhancing safety and accessibility. The timeline for this initiative is tight, with a goal to complete the guidelines by the end of the year.
Key projects identified for immediate focus include the Urban Trail on Main Street and the envisioned Hays Lake Trail, both of which are seen as vital components of the connected trail system. These projects are expected to not only improve community connectivity but also stimulate local economic growth.
The council is set to review the proposed scope of work for the technical assistance and the signage project in the coming months, marking a significant step forward in realizing the Hub City Greenways vision.
