During a recent government meeting in Anacortes, significant concerns were raised regarding the city's housing action plan and its implementation timeline. Ian Muntz, a local resident and former city council member, highlighted that several key initiatives outlined in the plan, issued in June 2023, have not been executed within the promised six-month timeframe. These initiatives include hiring a housing coordinator, streamlining accessory dwelling unit (ADU) regulations, and updating zoning standards.
Muntz emphasized the need for a dedicated housing coordinator to facilitate communication and information sharing, which he believes would enhance the city's housing efforts. He expressed frustration over the lack of progress on public land for affordable housing, noting that discussions had begun as early as 2018 without tangible outcomes.
Another resident, who identified himself as a member of the planning commission, criticized the underfunding of the planning department, stating that it has been unable to adequately support the housing action plan due to insufficient resources. He pointed out that the planning commission is being tasked with making critical decisions without the necessary data or community input, which he argued undermines the planning process.
The meeting also included an update from Libby Grange, the planning manager, on the timeline for the 2025 comprehensive plan update. Grange outlined the current phase of information gathering and analysis, with a deadline for completion set for December 2025. She assured attendees that public feedback would be sought throughout the process, with multiple opportunities for community involvement planned.
As the city grapples with housing challenges, the discussions reflect a growing urgency for effective planning and community engagement to address the needs of Anacortes residents.
