During a recent government meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) and its recent rate hike decision. The discussion highlighted the overwhelming public opposition to the proposed increase, with over 1,000 emails reportedly sent against the hike, while only four were in favor.
Senator Middleton and Representatives Terrello Wilson and Vassuet were present to address these issues, particularly focusing on the public comment proceedings held in Galveston. It was noted that nearly all attendees at the public meeting opposed the rate increase, with only two individuals supporting it. One of the supporters was identified as Beamon Floyd.
The meeting also questioned the effectiveness of public input in the decision-making process, given that the TWIA board had already voted 6 to 3 in favor of the rate hike. Concerns were raised about the composition of the board, with two of the six voting members being out-of-state representatives, which some local officials argued undermined the interests of Texas residents.
The discussions underscored a growing frustration among local leaders regarding the perceived disconnect between public sentiment and the actions of the TWIA, raising questions about the transparency and accountability of the association in addressing the needs of the communities it serves.
