In a recent government meeting, the Lake County workforce development department presented a joint resolution to accept a significant Illinois grant of $6,847,873, aimed at bolstering local employment initiatives. The funding, which represents a 30% increase from previous allocations, is part of the annual Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) formula funds that the county receives.
Director Jennifer Serrano highlighted that the increase in funding is attributed to a rise in the unemployment rate in certain areas of Lake County, which exceeded the typical range of 4.5% to 5%. During the assessment period, some areas reported unemployment rates as high as 8.6%. This uptick in unemployment, particularly among long-term unemployed individuals, has prompted the need for additional resources to support job seekers and local businesses.
The resolution also includes a proposal to increase the workforce development staff by one full-time employee, specifically to enhance outreach efforts in the manufacturing sector. This new position will focus on connecting displaced workers with hiring manufacturers and collaborating with the College of Lake County to develop a manufacturing alliance aimed at job creation and talent development.
Serrano emphasized the department's strategic focus on community engagement, particularly with minority-owned and women-owned businesses, and initiatives to expand job center services into local communities. The meeting concluded with unanimous support for the resolution, reflecting a collective commitment to addressing the challenges posed by rising unemployment and fostering economic growth in Lake County.
