In a recent meeting of the Safety, Housing, Education and Homelessness Committee, council members gathered to discuss a critical action item aimed at addressing Denver's affordable housing crisis. Chair Serana Gonzalez Gutierrez opened the session on August 7, emphasizing the importance of the affordable housing ballot measure that is set to be presented to the public.
Council President Amanda Sandoval, participating virtually, highlighted the urgency of the situation, particularly in Northwest Denver, where gentrification and displacement have become pressing issues. Sandoval noted the lack of affordable housing projects in the area over the past five years, underscoring the need for immediate action.
The proposed measure involves a sales and use tax aimed at combating the affordable housing challenges facing the city. Sandoval expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of her fellow council members and the mayor's office in developing the ordinance, which she believes is a significant step forward.
A public hearing is scheduled for August 12 at 5:30 PM, allowing community members to voice their opinions on the measure. Sign-ups for public participation will begin on August 8 at 5 PM. The committee aims to ensure that the voices of Denver residents are heard as they navigate the complexities of affordable housing solutions.
