In a recent government meeting, facility services director Ed Nichols addressed critical staffing and safety issues within the department. Nichols reported ongoing investigations into a fire incident caused by wiring issues, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols.
Nichols proposed a budget request for protective footwear for maintenance and custodial staff, highlighting the need for safety measures to prevent injuries from slips and falls. He requested $3,000 to cover protective footwear for 30 employees, arguing that custodians, who frequently work with wet surfaces, should not be excluded from this policy. The footwear policy would require staff to wear safety toe and non-slip work boots, with an annual cost of $100 per person.
Additionally, Nichols outlined a significant staffing request to meet the demands of the upcoming new courthouse, scheduled for completion in fiscal year 2026. He is seeking approval for six maintenance mechanics, one groundskeeper, and eight custodians to adequately service the expanded facility. Currently, the existing courthouse operates with three custodians for 68,000 square feet, but the new courthouse will require a substantial increase in staffing to maintain service levels.
Nichols stressed the urgency of these requests, noting that the department needs to prepare for the transition to the new courthouse, which will involve not only maintenance but also logistical support during the move. The proposed staffing changes aim to ensure that the department can effectively manage the increased workload and maintain safety standards for all employees.
