Residents of the Rayburn neighborhood are raising urgent safety concerns regarding the intersection of Coleraine and Rayburn, particularly near Mount Airy Forest. During a recent government meeting, Lace Walter, a local resident, highlighted the dangers posed by inadequate traffic light timing and rampant speeding in the area.
Walter emphasized that the current traffic light duration is insufficient, leading to frustrating delays and near-miss incidents for residents attempting to enter and exit the neighborhood. The situation is exacerbated by excessive speeding on Coleraine Avenue, where many drivers frequently exceed the posted speed limit, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and other vehicles.
To address these issues, Walter proposed the installation of yellow flashing lights to alert drivers of the upcoming traffic light, as well as a thorough evaluation of the traffic light timing to better accommodate the volume of traffic. Additionally, she called for increased enforcement of speed limits and the implementation of traffic calming measures to enhance safety for all community members.
Another resident echoed these concerns, describing Coleraine Avenue as a \"death trap\" due to reckless driving behaviors. This resident reported witnessing drivers exceeding speed limits by significant margins and running red lights, further endangering those trying to navigate the area.
The residents are urging the city council to take immediate action to improve safety measures, emphasizing the need for a community where residents can travel without fear for their safety.
