The Trailhawks, a local race team in St. Mary's County, is gearing up for an exciting season as they kick off their first race this weekend at Rosaryville. With approximately 15 members, the team is set to participate in several races across Maryland, including locations such as Deep Creek, Patapsco, Button Farm, and Fair Hill.
The team also competes in the Virginia Area High School (VAHS) series, traveling to Virginia to engage with other youth riders and promote the sport. The coach, a level three certified instructor, expressed the rewarding experience of mentoring young riders, many of whom start with minimal skills and grow significantly over time.
Despite the enthusiasm and growth of the team, challenges remain, particularly regarding the lack of adequate parking facilities at St. Mary's River State Park, which limits the potential for hosting local races. The team is exploring alternative venues, including local farms, to accommodate larger events.
The economic impact of the NYCaE events is notable, with approximately 1,500 attendees generating around $50,000 for local businesses during race weekends. The team aims to increase participation and visibility, aspiring to transform St. Mary's County into a recognized riding destination while fostering partnerships with state land managers to expand trail systems.
The Trailhawks' commitment to building and maintaining trails for all users reflects their dedication to promoting healthy recreational opportunities within the community. As they continue to grow, the team hopes to attract more visitors and enhance the local economy through their passion for mountain biking.
